Why Most Productivity Advice Fails Us (and What Actually Works)

Let’s be real: If traditional productivity hacks actually worked for busy humans juggling careers, caregiving, and the mental load of it all, we’d all be crossing off our to-do lists with a smile and a latte. But most of us are left feeling behind, overwhelmed, and guilty for not being able to “just do it.”

Most mainstream productivity advice was created for a world that assumes you have uninterrupted blocks of time, a single set of priorities, and—let’s be honest—someone else handling the invisible work. The reality? Life is beautifully (and sometimes chaotically) complex. Your days are filled with curveballs, context-switching, and the invisible labor no planner app can capture.

  • Routines that ignore real life: “Just wake up at 5 AM!” (Who’s getting the kids ready or handling the late-night laundry?)
  • Willpower myths: “You just need more discipline.” (Spoiler: burnout is not a badge of honor.)
  • Endless to-do lists: “Write it all down and check it off.” (But what about the mental load you can’t put on paper?)

Women especially (but not exclusively) are often the chief organizers, emotional anchors, and silent project managers of their families and workplaces. The real challenge isn’t laziness or lack of ambition—it’s that most systems weren’t built for the way our brains and lives actually work.

  • We’re expected to be consistent machines, but our energy and responsibilities fluctuate daily.
  • We’re told to “just focus,” but the world keeps interrupting (and so do our thoughts).
  • We crave clarity and calm, but perfectionism and comparison sneak in at every turn.

Here’s the truth: The most powerful productivity shifts come from honoring your reality, not fighting it. That means:

  • Building routines that flex with your life, not against it
  • Celebrating tiny wins instead of shaming setbacks
  • Using tools that support your unique strengths and struggles (not someone else’s highlight reel)
  • Practicing self-compassion and giving yourself permission to reset—again and again

I’ve spent years experimenting, failing, and finally finding what works for real people with real lives. And I’m excited to share a new (free!) resource designed to help you move from chaos to clarity—without the pressure, guilt, or perfectionism. Stay tuned for details in the next few days. 💜

If you’ve ever felt like you’re the problem, I promise: you aren’t. The old approach just wasn’t built for you. Let’s build something better, together.
