Executive Function for Parents & Kids: Holiday Survival Series Kickoff

Start here for calm, focus, and real wins—all season long.

TL;DR: The holidays throw everyone’s routines into chaos, but your family can thrive—not just survive—by understanding and strengthening executive function skills. This series is your roadmap to clarity, calm, and real progress (with zero shame and lots of support).

Let’s be real for a sec: December hits, and suddenly parents are juggling work, school breaks, travel, family drama, and endless “to-dos.” Routines go out the window. Kids are home (and bouncing off the walls), and you’re expected to be the calm, organized center of the universe—while everyone else spirals. Sound familiar?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, scattered, or guilty about not “doing it all,” you’re not alone. The truth? Most families struggle with routines and focus this time of year. That’s not a personal failing—it’s literally how your brain is wired, especially under stress.

Executive function (EF) is the set of mental skills that help us plan, focus, remember, and juggle life’s moving parts. Think of EF as your brain’s “command center”—and yes, kids and adults both need it, especially when routines are disrupted.

  • For Parents: EF helps you keep track of schedules, manage stress, and model calm—even when chaos reigns.
  • For Kids: EF skills support emotional regulation, transitions, and independent problem-solving. (Think: fewer meltdowns, more ‘I got this!’ moments—even when the schedule flips.).

When life gets messy, EF is what helps you pivot instead of panic.

If your family feels like it’s running an obstacle course in pajamas, you’re not alone.

This season is a stress test for everyone’s EF skills. When routines change, brains have to work overtime to adapt—especially for neurodivergent families, or anyone who feels “behind” before breakfast.

But here’s the good news: With a little clarity and some actionable strategies, you can build executive function muscles that last long after the holiday lights come down. (Yes, you’ll use these skills well into the new year—promise.)

If you’re new here, I’m Jenn—mom, entrepreneur, executive function nerd, and your guide through the holiday maze. I know firsthand how overwhelming this season can feel, and I’m passionate about helping you ditch the guilt, find your rhythm, and create real wins (even if it’s just getting everyone out the door with shoes on).

This series will break down EF for real families—no jargon, no shame, just practical tools and a whole lot of encouragement.

This post lives inside my Clarity in Action and Authentic Productivity pillars—two of the foundational themes of Productive AF. Clarity in Action is all about cutting through overwhelm, simplifying your routines, and making decisions that actually fit your real life (especially when the holiday chaos hits). Authentic Productivity means working with your brain, not against it—ditching one-size-fits-all hacks in favor of sustainable, neuro-friendly strategies that honor how you and your family truly operate.

Alongside other pillars like Consistency with Ease, Empowered Mindset, Wellness & Self‑Care, Real AF Wins & Community, and Tools, Templates & Resources, this series is here to help you build a life where clarity and productivity feel doable, supportive, and—most importantly—yours.
