My birthday was this week. I’m 52. And I’m officially retiring any productivity advice that requires me to become a different person.
Instead, I’m doing my new annual tradition: a reset that doesn’t require a vision board, a 5am wake-up time, or a personality transplant. At 52, I’m not interested in “new year, new me.” I’m interested in same me, cleaner systems—the kind that actually work when life is loud, your brain is spicy, and you’re carrying a lot.
This week, I was supposed to post three significant pieces of content. Instead, I was sick for four days. And you know what? I rested. I didn’t push through. I didn’t feel guilty. I just… stopped.
And that’s the whole point of this post.
The Truth Nobody Tells You About Overwhelm
If you’re overwhelmed, it’s not because you’re lazy. It’s not because you lack discipline. It’s not because you need to “try harder.”
It’s because you’re carrying too much—mentally, emotionally, logistically. And most productivity advice is basically: “Have you tried being less human?”
I spent years trying to be more. More disciplined. More focused. More productive. More everything.
And you know what happened? I got sicker. More burned out. More resentful.
Until I realized: the problem isn’t me. The problem is that I’m trying to fit my messy, spicy, neurodivergent brain into systems designed for people who don’t exist.
So I stopped. And I started building systems that actually work for me.
My Birthday Reset: 3 Steps to Cleaner Systems
Every year on my birthday, I do this reset. It takes about 30-60 minutes. And it’s the reason I don’t repeat the same month on a loop.
Step 1: What Am I Tolerating?
Energy leaks. Invisible labor. Unclear priorities. People-pleasing patterns. Clutter hotspots. Decisions I keep avoiding.
These are the things that drain you without you even noticing. They’re the reason you feel tired even when you’ve “done nothing.”
So I ask: What am I tolerating that I don’t have to?
Sometimes it’s a conversation I need to have. Sometimes it’s a boundary I need to set. Sometimes it’s just admitting that a system isn’t working and I need to change it.
The point isn’t to fix everything. It’s to see what’s draining you so you can make a choice about it.
Step 2: What’s Working That I’m Discounting?
Here’s the thing about being a high-functioning woman: we’re really good at measuring the gap.
The gap between where we are and where we want to be. The gap between what we did and what we didn’t do. The gap between our plan and our reality.
But if you only measure the gap, you’ll always feel behind.
So I flip it: What’s actually working? What did I do this year that I’m not giving myself credit for?
For me this year: I launched 3 podcasts and newsletters. I established daily self-care habits. I retired from corporate life. I reconciled with my husband. I built 3 businesses from scratch.
Were there things I didn’t do? Of course. But I also did things that matter.
And that counts.
Step 3: What’s My Next 30-Day Focus?
Not 10 goals. Not a vision board. Not a complete life overhaul.
One thing. One lever that makes everything else 10% easier.
For me this month: it’s finishing the content I didn’t get to while I was sick, without guilt or pressure. It’s honoring my body’s need for rest while also honoring my commitments.
Because here’s what I learned: consistency isn’t about doing everything. It’s about doing something, consistently.
The Permission Slip You Actually Need
If this year felt messy, it still counts.
You’re allowed to be proud of survival. Of recovery. Of boundaries you set. Of tiny wins that nobody else sees.
You’re allowed to rest when you’re sick. To reschedule when life happens. To move at your own pace.
That’s not “settling.” That’s not “not being ambitious enough.”
That’s wisdom.
And also? I’m proud of myself. Not for being perfect—lol—but for continuing to choose myself, my health, and my peace. That’s the real glow-up.
Your Turn: The Reflection Script & Worksheet
I made this free Reflection Script & Worksheet for anyone who wants a calmer, clearer next chapter.

It walks you through the exact reset I just shared: what you’re tolerating, what’s working, what your next focus is. Plus quarterly milestones and monthly reviews so you’re not waiting until your next birthday to check in.
It’s short. It’s doable. It’s designed for real life—not fantasy life.
Once you grab it, take 30-60 minutes. Get honest. And then tell me: what’s one thing you’re releasing this month? I read every message, and I will absolutely celebrate you.
Because that’s what Real AF is about. Seeing each other. Celebrating each other. Knowing you’re not alone.

This post lives at the intersection of three core Productive AF pillars:
Tools, Templates & Resources — I’m sharing the exact Reflection Script & Worksheet I use for my annual reset. Not a fancy planner or a complicated system, but a practical, low-friction tool designed for real life—especially for women 50+ who are tired of systems that require you to become a different person.
Authentic Productivity — This entire post is about building systems that work for you, not against you. It’s about rejecting the myth that productivity requires perfection, discipline, or a personality transplant. It’s about honoring how your brain actually works and designing your life around that, not around someone else’s ideal routine.
Empowered Mindset — The permission slip at the heart of this post is an empowered mindset in action: knowing that your messy middle counts, that rest is not something you have to earn, and that moving at your own pace is wisdom, not laziness. That’s what Real AF looks like.
Because productivity isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing what matters—in a way that honors who you actually are. 💙
